Driver shortage grows for trucking and same day delivery sector

Written by Dan Boaz | Oct 7, 2015

While 2015 has been a strong year so far for the nationwide trucking sector, the lack of drivers for same day freight and freight loads in general, remains an ongoing concern. Per the most recent U.S. Employment Outlook for September nationally, the transportation sector has just over 350,000 open jobs with about 80% of those for truck drivers.

Perhaps most telling is the fact that the transportation industry has shown a total increase in vacancies of twenty percent compared with a year earlier. The study shows that just over 297,000 truck driver positions need to be filled, a shortage that continues to grow unabated. These remain strong times for the transportation sector underpinned by a steady economy and employment market, in fact, transport related job openings account for some 7.5% of the national total of vacant positions.

In addition to truck drivers, there are also numerous positions for taxi drivers, logistics professionals, local delivery drivers, bus drivers and forklift operators. It's anticipated that due to seasonal demand coupled with the rapid growth of urgent delivery and same day shipping demand that the local delivery driver sector will accelerate most rapidly over the coming six months.

The study shows the pronounced growth in driver vacancies for local same day deliveries in the largest urban markets which further demonstrates the demand is tied closely to an explosion in retail same day delivery and our specialty business to business same day trucking.
