The proposed Great River Bridge spanning the Mississippi River close to Arkansas City is the focus of a project that will clear the way for the construction of Interstate 69 in the area. Recent meetings have pinpointed the bridge as the key to improving connections in the region as funding is explored.
A 16 mile stretch of right-of-way for the bridge and highway is being assessed for purchase by The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation which would then be followed by bids for the project. Funding is in short supply and Federal assistance will be needed to see the two states benefit from its eventual completion.
The project would bring significant value to the busy freight corridors from Texas up to the Great Lakes and the region is already suffering from capacity problems much of it due to truck traffic. In a region with the insufficient interstate infrastructure in place, it would greatly improve east-west traffic across Arkansas and to points beyond.
