Best Buy the latest retailer to test Same Day Delivery services

The same day delivery race for retailers is accelerating unabated with the news that Best Buy are the latest large chain to lay out plans to experiment with same day shipping services. Compared with Target and Macy's the addition of Best Buy will be an interesting one to watch as much of their inventory consists of larger items and they sell a more specific product line, electronics, than their competition.

In keeping with previous traditional retailers and online marketplaces Best Buy is launching a test program for their same day delivery services in the San Francisco area. Naturally population density and an existing delivery infrastructure are key factors in testing the same day market for retailers both online and offline, and the Bay Area fits that profile ideally.

Best Buy has announced that they will be partnering with delivery startup Deliv (whom we've written about a number of times) for the delivery fulfillment part of the trial. Same day delivery rates have not been released as they will be dependent on the order itself which would suggest that the bulkier dimensions of Best Buy's inventory are likely to come into play.

If the tests are successful it's probable that additional cities could be added to the fold in 2016 and it is likely that the first wave of markets would mirror those chosen by other retailers to establish the overall demand and viability for same day shipping in different urban areas. Best Buy, who are headquartered in Richfield MN have just over 1,050 locations in the U.S. in addition to more than 70 in Canada.
